Consultant Microbiologist

Job description

We are looking for a Consultant Microbiologist to join a great hospital in Ireland.

You will be responsible for providing a comprehensive microbiology service, including diagnostic laboratory support, infection prevention and control, antimicrobial stewardship, and clinical liaison.

The role involves close collaboration with clinical teams, participation in multidisciplinary meetings, and supervision of laboratory and medical staff.

Key Responsibilities:

• Deliver a 24/7 clinical microbiology consultancy service on a shared rota.

• Oversee laboratory operations including diagnostics, result authorisation, and quality assurance.

• Engage in antimicrobial stewardship and infection control initiatives.

• Participate in critical care rounds and MDT meetings with specialties such as transplant, orthopaedics, vascular surgery, and haematology.

• Contribute to education, training, and supervision of scientific and medical trainees.

• Support research and audit activities.

Qualifications:

• Specialist registration in Microbiology with the Medical Council of Ireland.

• Demonstrated expertise in all major microbiology subspecialties.

• Proven leadership, communication, and team management skills.

• Commitment to patient-focused service delivery, clinical governance, and continuous professional development.

Additional Requirements:

• Participation in on-call rota (1:6).

• Willingness to engage in clinical audit, teaching, and hospital-wide quality initiatives.

• Garda vetting and pre-employment medical clearance required.
