About The Mater

The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital is a tertiary referral and teaching hospital in Dublin, providing a comprehensive range of acute and specialist services at local, regional, and national levels. The hospital has 745 inpatient beds, 225 day beds, and 16 operating theatres, supporting high-acuity and complex surgical care.

The Mater is a Major Trauma Centre and a national referral centre for specialised services including trauma surgery, oncology, transplant surgery, cardiology, and complex general surgery. It is affiliated with University College Dublin and has a strong commitment to education, training, clinical research, and audit.

Trauma & General Surgery at The Mater

The Trauma and General Surgery service manages a high volume of emergency and elective surgical cases, including major trauma, abdominal emergencies, soft tissue infections, gastrointestinal emergencies, and complex general surgical conditions.

As a Major Trauma Centre, the unit provides 24/7 consultant-led trauma care, working closely with emergency medicine, orthopaedics, anaesthesia, ICU, radiology, and specialist nursing teams. The service is actively involved in trauma governance, audit, and service development at a national level.

Role Overview

The Mater is seeking a Consultant Trauma & General Surgeon to join its dynamic surgical team. The role includes delivering high-quality trauma and emergency general surgery care, participating in elective general surgery, contributing to multidisciplinary trauma management, and supporting ongoing service development, teaching, and research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver consultant-level trauma and emergency general surgical care for acutely unwell and injured patients.

  • Manage elective and emergency general surgery cases, including gastrointestinal and abdominal emergencies.

  • Participate in major trauma call rotas and provide senior clinical decision-making in emergency settings.

  • Attend outpatient clinics, ward rounds, trauma meetings, and multidisciplinary team meetings.

  • Contribute to trauma governance, audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives.

  • Teach and supervise medical students, surgical trainees, and other healthcare professionals.

  • Provide clinical leadership within the Trauma & General Surgery service.

Essential Requirements

  • Eligible for Specialist Registration with the Irish Medical Council.

  • Demonstrated experience in trauma surgery and general surgery at consultant level.

  • Strong commitment to multidisciplinary working, teaching, and clinical governance.
