Job description

Consultant Role Neonatology

(Limerick)

You will be based in the Neonatal Unit, a regional specialist service delivering expert care to critically ill and premature newborns, with 19 approved cots including intensive care capacity – the second largest neonatal unit in Ireland outside of Dublin.

As a Consultant Neonatologist, you will:

  • Provide senior clinical leadership and consultant‑level neonatal care for premature and critically ill newborn infants.

  • Participate fully in the neonatal rota and serve as a senior presence on the unit.

  • Supervise, mentor and train non‑consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs), junior staff and the multidisciplinary neonatal team.

  • Engage in clinical governance, audit, risk management and quality improvement activities.

  • Collaborate with paediatric support services, obstetrics, midwifery and allied health professionals.

  • Undertake teaching responsibilities for medical students and junior doctors in conjunction with the University of Limerick.

  • Contribute to service development and research initiatives.

Your time will be structured approximately as:

  • 10 hours per week neonatal ward rounds

  • 12 hours per week neonatal unit cover

  • 5 hours per week diagnostic/treatment activity

  • 6 hours per week outpatient and high‑risk follow‑up clinic duties

  • 2 hours per week consultation services

  • 4 hours per week management, professional development and teaching

  • Participation in the neonatology on‑call rota

This reflects the official weekly commitment for the post and highlights the balance between direct clinical care, teaching, management and specialist duties.

  • Competitive public consultant salary scale under the Public Only Consultant Contract 2026 (with incremental progression based on experience)

  • 30 days annual leave + 10 public holidays
