GP Pathway to Specialist Registration (2 Years)

Overview

Are you a doctor with at least 36 months’ experience in General Practice or Family Medicine? This is a fantastic opportunity to join a structured two-year programme that combines hands-on work in Irish general practice with a dedicated educational pathway leading towards GP specialisation.

Upon successful completion, participants can apply for entry onto the Irish Medical Council Specialist Register in General Practice.

Programme Highlights

• Work within established rural GP practices across Ireland, delivering comprehensive patient care.
• Complete a structured educational programme through the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP).
• Undertake self-directed learning and professional development.
• Prepare for and complete the CCT and CKT examinations.
• Progress towards Specialist Registration in General Practice in Ireland.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have a minimum of 36 months’ General Practice or Family Medicine experience that includes:

• Independent management of patients in a primary care setting.
• Diagnosis and treatment of both acute and chronic medical conditions.
• Providing care to patients across all age groups, from infants to older adults.
• Experience gained in a variety of primary care environments, including cruise ship medicine where applicable.

Experience That Does Not Qualify

The following experience cannot be counted towards the 36-month requirement:

• Emergency Medicine
• Walk-in GP clinics
• Out-of-hours services
• Minor Injury Units
• GP locum work undertaken as a secondary role

Additional Requirements

• Eligibility for General Registration with the Irish Medical Council.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to adapt to new clinical settings and healthcare systems.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development and learning.
