Consultant General Surgeon, Special Interest in Paediatric Surgery
Cork, Ireland

We are seeking a Consultant General Surgeon with a Special Interest in Paediatric Surgery to join the Department of Surgery at a leading hospital in Cork.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Surgical Leadership

  • Provide expert clinical and surgical care in general surgery with a paediatric subspecialty focus.
  • Participate in on-call and emergency service rotas for general and paediatric surgery.
  • Lead preoperative assessment, operative planning, and postoperative care for complex paediatric surgical cases.

Multidisciplinary Care & Collaboration

  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams including paediatricians, anaesthetists, nursing staff, and allied health professionals.
  • Coordinate care and referral pathways across hospital departments and affiliated sites.

Service Development & Governance

  • Support the development of clinical governance frameworks, and service coordination strategies.
  • Engage in peer reviews, guideline development, audit, and quality improvement activities.

Teaching, Training & Research

  • Supervise, mentor, and train non-consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs), surgical trainees, and allied health professionals.
  • Contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate medical and nursing staff.
  • Participate in audit, research, and continuous professional development activities.

Salary & Benefits

  • Competitive HSE Consultant salary scale in line with current public consultant pay
  • 30 days annual leave + 10 public holidays
  • CME leave and support for ongoing professional development
  • €235K- €283k+ per annum

Eligibility

Applicants should hold:

  • Specialist qualification and training in General Surgery with additional subspecialty training or experience in paediatric surgery, including recognised fellowship experience or equivalent.
  • Eligibility for or current Irish Medical Council Specialist Registration.
  • Strong leadership, organisation, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
