Consultant in Palliative Medicine
HSE | Naas General Hospital & St. Brigid’s Hospice, Kildare
Temporary Contract (to approx. August 2026) | 0.5 – 1.0 WTE
Role Overview
We are seeking a Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join an established specialist service delivering high-quality, patient-centred care across Naas General Hospital and St. Brigid’s Hospice, Kildare, supported by Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services (OLH&CS).
This is a Public Only Consultant Contract (POCC) role offering flexible working hours and the opportunity to work within a well-developed, multidisciplinary palliative care service covering inpatient, outpatient, and community settings.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Provide a consult liaison palliative care service in Naas General Hospital
- Deliver direct clinical care to patients in St. Brigid’s Hospice inpatient unit and community services
- Assess, diagnose, and manage patients with complex palliative care needs
- Ensure care is evidence-based, safe, and patient-centred
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver coordinated care across settings
Leadership & Service Development
- Contribute to the strategic and operational development of palliative care services
- Ensure alignment with national frameworks such as:
- National Adult Palliative Care Policy (2024)
- Cancer Strategy 2017-2026
- Model of Care for Adult Palliative Care Services
- Support service planning, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical governance
Supervision & Teaching
- Supervise and support NCHDs and multidisciplinary team members
- Participate in education, training, and mentorship
- Contribute to research, audit, and continuous professional development
On-Call & Service Commitments
- Participate in a regional on-call rota across the palliative care network
- Provide cross-cover where required and ensure service continuity
Essential Requirements
- IMC Specialist Registration in Palliative Medicine (or eligibility within 30 days)
- Significant experience at Consultant level or equivalent
- Strong clinical, leadership, and communication skills
- Commitment to high-quality palliative and end-of-life care
Working Environment
- St. Brigid’s Hospice: 13-bed specialist inpatient unit with active community team
- Naas General Hospital: 243-bed acute hospital with a busy Emergency Department
- Support from Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services, a national leader in palliative care
Additional Information
- Participation in clinical audit, governance, and service improvement is expected
- Garda Vetting and pre-employment health screening required
- Full driving licence and access to a car required
