Forensic Consultant Psychiatrist

Our client is seeking an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist in Forensic Psychiatry to provide specialist assessment, treatment, risk formulation and clinical leadership within a community-based forensic mental health service. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering safe, evidence based, person centred care while working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

The Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist will provide expert psychiatric assessment and treatment for individuals presenting with complex mental health and forensic needs. The role involves developing comprehensive risk management plans, contributing to clinical governance processes, and supporting multidisciplinary teams in the delivery of high-quality care.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct specialist forensic psychiatric assessments and reviews.
• Develop comprehensive treatment, recovery and risk management plans.
• Provide expert psychiatric input for individuals with complex mental health presentations, forensic histories, behavioural challenges and dual diagnoses.
• Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team including psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists, behavioural specialists and social care professionals.
• Maintain accurate, high-quality clinical documentation and medico-legal reports.
• Participate in service development, clinical governance, audit and quality improvement initiatives.
• Support regulatory compliance and adherence to relevant legislation, standards and professional guidelines.
• Contribute to on-call arrangements and consultant cover where required.
• Promote a recovery-focused, person-centred approach to care.

Candidate Requirements

Essential

• Specialist Registration (or eligibility for Specialist Registration UK/EU) with the Irish Medical Council.
• Experience working as a Consultant Psychiatrist within forensic mental health services.
• Excellent assessment, diagnostic and clinical decision-making skills.
• Strong knowledge of risk assessment and management within forensic settings.
• Ability to produce high-quality clinical reports and documentation.
• Evidence of participation in audit, research, teaching or continuous professional development.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable

• Experience working across both forensic and intellectual disability services.
• Additional qualifications in forensic mental health, research, leadership or medical education.
• Experience supporting community-based forensic mental health programmes.
